Proposed hike in union dues rankling sheet metal workers

(POSTED: 11/16/09) Already strained under the weight of the recession, members of Sheet Metal Workers Local 73 feel pushed over the edge as they face a substantial dues hike -- nearly a 70 percent increase from their current rate.
Dues could jump from $337 to $562 per quarter, following a mandate from the international union to build up an empty six-month reserve fund. But for a lot of workers, it would be too much to endure.
"When times are tough and jobs are few and far between, I think squeezing your members for more money is ridiculous," said SMW member Marc Noreuil in an email.
Others in the union called the raise "excessive" and "inconsiderate" for a local with 600 to 700 members unemployed. People were also surprised by the high amount because dues rose only about $35 the last time contracts were up, one worker said.
Fearing that the spike will chase out a lot of members, President Rocco Terranova is proposing an alternative option with a dues checkoff. Instead of the flat quarterly rate at $562, members would pay $120 plus 1.75 percent of their wages. That way the people out of work would not be hit as hard.
"How do I ask people that can't pay $337 to pay $562?" Terranova said, adding that most building trades have a checkoff. "I think it's the fairest system I can do."
SMW member Jim Motill, a 39-year-old from Chicago, sees the dues issue as a Catch-22. "Bottom line," he said, "we're out of cash, we have to get the money in somehow."
Members will vote on the new dues structure Nov. 21.
Since Terranova took office in July, Local 73 has undergone cost-cutting measures, including lowering salaries, cutting office staff and trimming legal fees. He also replaced their Cadillacs with Fords, removed cameras from the hall and ended the use of police at meetings. But as for the dues hike, he said, "I have no other options."
